Issue

I'm trying to open an IRM Information Rights Management (IRM) provides security for downloaded documents. When IRM is applied, documents are encrypted before downloading, and users must enter their email address and password to view the documents. Exchange managers can revoke access at any time.-protected PDF file but only see the following message:

Cause

This message generally appears for the following reasons:

  • You do not have the required Adobe Reader DC installed as your default PDF reader.
  • You do have Adobe Reader DC installed, but your web browser is set to open PDFs by default (instead of Reader).

Solution

To address this message, you have two options:

Option 1 - Use Adobe Reader DC

To download / open the PDF in its native format, install and configure Adobe Reader DC.

Install Adobe Reader

  1. Visit the Adobe Reader download page:  https://get.adobe.com/reader
  2. Uncheck the McAfee options in the More add-ons box (unless you'd like to use those additional features).
  3. Click Download Acrobat Reader.
  4. Double-click the downloaded file to run the installation.  
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the process.

Set Adobe Reader as your default PDF viewer

In addition to having Reader on your system, you must ensure that the program is set to open PDFs.

Windows

  1. Click the Windows Start icon and type control panel.  
  2. Select Control Panel in the search results.
  3. Click Programs > Default Programs
  4. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  5. In the separate window that opens, scroll down and click Choose default apps by file type.  
  6. Scroll down and locate .pdf in the Name column.  
  7. Click the app icon or Choose a default to the right of the file type and select Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

macOS

  1. Select a PDF on your computer.
  2. Press Command + I.
  3. In the Get Info window, locate the Open with: drop-down menu.
  4. Click the menu and select Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
  5. Click the Change All button to retain the setting for all PDFs going forward.

Disable your web browser's PDF reader

Microsoft Edge

  1. In the Edge address bar, type or copy/paste edge://settings/content/pdfDocuments and press Enter.
  2. On the Site permissions / PDF documents screen, click the Always download PDF files toggle to enable the setting.
  3. Press the F5 key to refresh your browser.

Google Chrome

  1. In the Chrome address bar, type or copy/paste chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments and press Enter.
  2. On the PDF documents screen, select the Download PDFs radio button.
  3. Press the F5 key to refresh your browser.

Firefox

  1. In the Firefox address bar, type or copy/paste about:preferences and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to the Files and Applications > Applications section.
  3. Locate Portable Document Format (PDF) in the Content Type column.
  4. Click the Action drop-down menu and select Use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
  5. Press the F5 key to refresh your browser.
     

Option 2 - View PDFs through the Intralinks secure viewer

If you prefer not to install Adobe Reader DC or update your settings, simply click the Open in VDRPro button in the message window. The PDF will open directly in the exchange's secure document viewer.
