Issue
I'm trying to open an IRM-protected Microsoft Office file but only see one of the following error messages:
- Sorry, something went wrong opening Information Rights Management protected content. The parameter is incorrect.
- Sorry, you need permission to open this document. Do you want to request permission from [email address]?
Cause
These errors are caused by old or corrupt data in your Microsoft Office RMS cache.
Solution
Clearing your Microsoft Office RMS cache can help.
- On your Windows computer, click either the Windows Start or Search (magnifying glass) icon.
- Type Run and press Enter. The Run window opens.
- Enter %localappdata%\Microsoft in the Open field and click OK.
- Your File Explorer should open to the following path: User Name > AppData > Local > Microsoft.
- Next:
- If you have Office 2013 or higher: Locate the MSIPC folder.
- If you have Office 2010: Locate the DRM folder.
- Rename the folder and add _OLD to the name (e.g., MSIPC_OLD; DRM_OLD).
- Close the File Explorer window.
- Open an IRM-protected Office file again and see if your issue is resolved.
