Protected documents
Some files in a deal may be protected using Intralinks Document Protection. Protected documents have additional security restrictions and behave differently from standard documents.
Document protection applies to PDF, Microsoft Office, image, text and XML files. See supported file formats.
Identifying protected documents
Protected documents are marked in the document list to indicate that restrictions apply.
Viewing protected documents
- Protected documents open in the browser-based document viewer.
- This is the intended and supported way to view protected documents.
Downloading protected documents
When you download a protected document, a PDF file is downloaded instead.
- The PDF file includes a message explaining that the document is protected.
- The PDF contains a link that opens the document securely in the browser.
The downloaded PDF does not contain the original document content and cannot be opened in native applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
This behaviour is expected and helps prevent offline access and unauthorized sharing.
Supported file formats
Document protection is available for following types. Files not listed here will not be protected, even if document protection is enabled.
| Category | Supported formats |
| Excel | XLSX, XSLM, CSV, XLS |
| Word | DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOT, DOTX, DOTM |
| PowerPoint | PPT, PPTX, PPTM, POT, POTX, POTM, PPS, PPSX, PPSM |
